Stephen Seifert’s Dulcimer Diary 029 - Cool way to learn a tune PLUS noter and quill.

This is a fantastic way to learn new tunes. I spend a good bit of time talking about noter and quill and all the thoughts and feelings that surround the topic for me. What do you think about playing with a noter? What do you think about learning tunes this way?

In this video, I talk about using different tunings to play in different keys at old-time jams.

I cover a technique that has been called by violinist and composer Conni Ellisor “the secret to fast playing.” I do this on hammer dulcimer, but I also cover this on mountain dulcimer towards the end. It has done wonders for me. I am often in this awkward situation where I am mentioning musicians who have encouraged and helped me a great deal. I do these videos off the cuff, and in the moment, ...

Nicely played.
Beautiful and so mellow. I tire of the folk songs sometimes….
Beautiful
So beautiful
i couldn’t be happier with how colorful and lucid this beauty sounds, and im truly very impressed at the tremendous skill 🙏🏿 im gonna watch another one .
Beautiful
What a cool instrument. Thanks for the clear instruction.
The mountain dulcimer was the only musical instrument that I could play. And I played it rather well! I used to have three of them, each in a different mode so I didn't have to take time to retune when playing a gig or busking. I have many wonderful memories of those days. My favorite is playing at a biker party and having the crowd spontaneously sing along to Amazing Grace
This is my favorite tune I took Ricks class last Saturday. It was fun. Very nice to meet you
Any chance you sell some tabs I love this song for beginners
This is cool because there's a similar trick for learning to juggle higher numbers where you work with three balls and throw them as early as possible and then as late as possible. Seems like a great way to connect physicality with sensing. Thanks for sharing!
Very cool!
Brilliant tutorial, brilliant camera angle. Thanks friend.
We've plenty of culture
Absolutely love it
How did I never try this tuning?! Thank you so much for this lovely diary video. Love watching and listening to your explorations. Slow dulcimer. Yes!!
Nice jam!
What model is that? Where can I buy one like that?
Thanks for slow time with Steve. I started to play the dulcimer 3 years ago at age 60. I don't think God will allow me the time to learn to play close to that. But who knows? Love the video
So sad. Full up :(
Sounds so sweet! All of my dulcimers are DAD, so I borrowed one set up for DAA, to learn what I can do with that tuning. So thank you for this very helpful video! Now I can get started.
Just found your web page. I will join up. Thanks.
Sorry Steve, all your sessions were sold out. Congratulations on doing that. Do you have these to sell separately? I was not going to enroll until I saw this video. It's a great way to introduce the lessons.
I love slow time! 😂 I find it peaceful.
Thanks for sharing! Slow is great in these fast times.
Hi Stephen. Is a tuning fork better than an electronic tuner?
That’s a little bit like asking if a book is better than a PDF. The two things are different and sometimes they can work together. I like how tuning forks require no batteries. I like how they keep my ear in shape. there’s a time and a place for all the different options. Just because you go with one as your default doesn’t mean you can’t get better at learning the others. And like I said, they can all work together nicely.
There's an herb shop I go to and I enjoy making my own blends of tea from what they have there. Do you just drink green tea by itself or have you ever tried mixing it with other herbs? If so, what else do you like in your tea? I dehydrate citrus and sometimes use lavender in mine.
I’m not against having other things being there, but I do tend to like tasting all the different treatments of camellia sinensis. When you get all that other stuff in there, it seems ti mask the more subtle flavors achieved by tea masters in Japan, China and Taiwan. Putting a strong flavor like licorice root desensitize me and kind of makes everything taste the same. I do think it taste good but I just find myself drawn to the more traditional side of this. I go through phases though.
What a sound you get from the instrument, how beautiful it sounds. You are an artist. It sounds magical. These vibrations raise the frequency of any person. How harmonious. Congratulations friend and don't stop playing. Here from Toledo (Spain)
I'm a guitar player trying to make sense of the dulcimer and this is great. Thanks for sharing!
Brilliant!
Very, very nice, and I love your improvisations with this old tune!
goes to my soul and eases all the worry of this world , thank you,
Lovely, just lovely. 💜 Happy Mother’s Day to all.
Your creativity never ceases to amaze. Just stunning. Best wishes to all the kind, dedicated, and loving mothers out there.
Also, thank God for all the mothers out there
Great song and playing. 1st time I've heard this one. You give great thoughts in dulcimer diaries, but sometimes it great to just enjoy listening without deep thought.
Hi Stephen, I just listened to your video. Keep it up, I enjoy listening to your thoughts . I am a relative newbie in the dulcimer world. I waited until I was 60 before learning an instrument and when I learned about the dulcimer I wanted to learn to play it. Being in South Eastern Pennsylvania I dont remember ever hearing of a dulcimer. I know humility is a good trait, but there is a little pride in me playing a not so popular instrument which puts me in defense mode. Thanks again, hope to sign up for A to Z lessons sometime.
I like using a Jazz Pick on the Chromatic Dulcimer because it produces a nice Mellow Jazzy Sound.
I prefer using a Dunlop Jazz III Pick because it allows me to get a nice Jazz tone
I like using a Jazz Pick
😊
Excellent video and great introduction to a new old tune! Thanks also for the heads up on the old-time fiddle tune resource.
Thank you I appreciate your explanation.
Keep em coming
It makes me want to learn the dulcimer. Sweet song.
So thankful he’s got it digitally on his website!
Is the Tab for this tune available? It's lovely! ❤
